My earliest memory of smelling Frankincense was in church as a child, as Frankincense is used worldwide for ritual, in churches and temples, for prayer and mediation for millennium and even dates back to the ancient Egyptians. Enabling connection to their higher power, giving sustenance to the mind, body and soul.
It's quite fascinating the way these unique trees grow in somewhat inhospitable land in Somaliland and Oman, literally miles from anywhere.
The process of extraction is also quite interesting in that the way the resin is taken, is by making small incisions into the tree and allowing the white liquid to dry, and as it does it changes colour to pale yellows, golds and ochres.
It is then that these 'tears' are collected and taken to a sorting facility, whereby they are graded by purity, colour and potency.
The tears are then sent to Bulgaria to a state of the art distillery and then the oil is sent to Utah for final extensive testing and bottling.
What we absolutely love so much about the co-impact sourcing model with dōTERRA and the Frankincense tree growers, is that the trees are rested for years at a time to allow them to heal and be strong, as over farming in the past with the Aromatherapy industry, has affected and even killed many trees, so it's all about preservation and sustainability going forward.
The types of trees that dōTERRA and the farmers source are 4 different medicinal grade genus of Frankincense being.... carterii, sacra, papyrifera, and frereana
